The Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) is a panel study established in 2004 that collects socio-economic and biomedical life course data from people aged 50 and over (approx.140,000 to date) in almost 30 countries. It provides internationally comparable longitudinal microdata for scientific research and policy advice. As Europe's largest social science panel study and one of the major European research infrastructures in the field of social sciences, SHARE also has the legal form of a European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC) since 2011.

The SHARE BERLIN Institute GmbH (SBI) is the seat of the central coordination of SHARE and related scientific research. The SBI was founded in 2022 by the Social Science Research Center Berlin (WZB), the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin), the Charité – Universitäts­medizin Berlin and the German Centre of Gerontology (DZA). The SBI and SHARE-ERIC work closely together on all questions of implementation and scientific advancement of the research infrastructure.

Survey Specialist (f/m/d)

Part-time or full-time, minimum 25 hours per week, initially limited until December 31st 2024 with prospective for contractual renewal.

We are looking for someone to support the operational aspects of conducting a multinational, longitudinal survey. Your responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Explore own research ideas and publish peer-reviewed papers on methodological or substantive topics, contributing to the field’s advancement  
  • Actively working to develop, implement and evaluate routines in SHARE, concerning fieldwork monitoring, paradata documentation and processing, and sampling design
  • Support the switch from pure face-to-face interviewing to a mix with other survey modes (mixed-mode design), including a more flexible frequency interviewing
  • In collaboration with various stakeholders, coordinate, develop and evaluate questionnaire content for various modes of data collection, including face-to-face and telephone interviews, as well as online surveys
  • Develop and evaluate testing strategies (quantitative and qualitative) and manage the coordination of the questionnaire software testing with various stakeholders
  • Being the liaison to survey agencies and European country teams across the entirety of the SHARE network, communicating actively during fieldwork to ensure smooth running
  • Work in a project using machine learning techniques to map published work based on SHARE data to the topics covered in SHARE
  • Present research findings at national and international conferences and workshops

Your profile:

  • University degree (Master's or PhD) in a relevant field, such as social sciences, psychology, economics, public health, epidemiology, demography, statistics
  • Extensive experience with scientific project management, ideally within an academic context
  • Knowledge in quantitative data analysis using statistical software (preferably Stata or R)
  • Experience with survey implementation
  • Experience with machine learning algorithms is an advantage
  • Track record of self-organized & highly proactive working style
  • Strong team player, communication and organisational skills
  • Very good command of spoken and written English, other languages are welcome
