The Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) is a panel study established in 2004 that collects socio-economic and biomedical life course data from people aged 50 and over (aprox.140,000 to date) in almost 30 countries. It provides internationally comparable longitudinal microdata for scientific research and policy advice. As Europe's largest social science panel study and one of the major European research infrastructures in the field of social sciences, SHARE also has the legal form of a European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC) since 2011.

The SHARE BERLIN Institute GmbH (SBI) is the seat of the central coordination of SHARE and related scientific research. The SBI was founded in 2022 by the Social Science Research Center Berlin (WZB), the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin), the Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin and the German Centre of Gerontology (DZA). The SBI and SHARE-ERIC work closely together on all questions of implementation and scientific advancement of the research infrastructure.

For an interesting and manifold position in an international scientific working environment, we at the SBI are looking for a

Legal Officer (f/m/d)

Part-time or full-time, minimum 25 hours per week, initially limited until August 2027

Your area of responsibility:

  • Independent handling of complex legal matters and questions from various areas of law, in particular corporate, public procurement, European and data protection law as well as legal provisions relevant for scientific projects
  • Conceptualisation, amendment and negotiation of contracts with national and international cooperation partners and service providers in a scientific context
  • Corporate support (e. g. SHARE-ERIC Council, revision and supervision of the SHARE-ERIC Statutes and Bylaws as well as all other governance-relevant documents)
  • Legal Liaison with national funders in countries participating in the SHARE study, including Germany, and with the European Commission

Your profile:

  • Interest in being part of a European project; prior work experience in a European or international setting is advantageous
  • Several years of professional experience in areas of law that are of particular importance for scientific institutions and publicly funded organisations
  • Experience in international contracting and related negotiations preferably in a scientific context, knowledge of or experience with ERIC as a legal form is an advantage
  • Very good communication skills, in particular the ability to present complex legal issues in a simple and convincing manner to different audiences
  • Team player mentality and openness to work in a flexible team based in different locations, team leadership experience is an advantage
  • Strategic and conceptual thinking skills as well as an independent, proactive, solution-oriented and reliable working style
  • Assertiveness and ability to find and implement suitable solutions in an interdisciplinary environment
  • Excellent English and German language skills
  • Willingness and ability to quickly familiarise with new fields of work and the complex structure of SHARE as a transnational panel study and European research infrastructure
